April is Financial Literacy Month. Many (most) of my clients appreciate that I don’t just do the planning for them, but that I bring them along the journey with me, as partners, so that they can learn along the way. Today, I thought I’d peel back that curtain a bit so you can see that journey through another magical case study of a military couple.
NOTE: To protect the privacy of my clients, all names and identifying details in these case studies have been changed. As an avid Harry Potter fan, I’ve chosen to use names from the wizarding world to represent the real women and families I’ve had the honor to guide. While the names may be whimsical, the stories and strategies are grounded in real-life financial planning challenges and triumphs. My hope is that these magical aliases bring a touch of familiarity and warmth to the serious and important work of planning for your future.
Case Study: Luna (the single woman)
Nymphadora “Tonks” is bold, ambitious, and unafraid to take risks. She is building a successful career in corporate advertising and has a knack for maximizing every opportunity, including turning everyday spending into unforgettable travel through strategic credit card points. Remus is steady, thoughtful, and disciplined. A Navy officer finishing law school and preparing for the bar exam, he carries both responsibility and quiet determination. Together, in their early thirties, they are building a life rooted in possibility, but also navigating complexity that would make even the most seasoned wizard pause.
A Life in Transition
When we first met, they were standing at the edge of significant transition. A cross country PCS loomed ahead. Tonks had recently changed jobs and faced uncertainty about whether remote work would continue to be an option after the move. Remus was balancing military service with the final stretch of law school and the pressure of passing the bar. Their home needed to be turned into a rental. A new home needed to be found. Retirement accounts were scattered across old 401(k)s and a TSP. They had no children yet, manageable debt limited to a mortgage and two car loans, and a shared love of travel that reflected their desire to fully experience life along the way. They wanted clarity, confidence, and a deeper understanding of how all the pieces fit together.
Bringing Everything Into One Place
We began by building their entire financial life into one place. Seeing everything consolidated and aligned with their goals was a turning point. What once felt like scattered decisions became a cohesive plan. From there, we established a foundation that could support both stability and growth. Their emergency fund came first, positioned in high yield savings accounts to give them immediate liquidity and peace of mind, especially important given the unpredictability of military life and dual career uncertainty.
Balancing Growth and Stability
We then redesigned their investment strategy to reflect both of their personalities. Tonks’ comfort with risk and long term growth potential was balanced with Remus’s desire for stability and protection. The result was an asset allocation that allowed them to move forward confidently, knowing their plan respected both perspectives. We reviewed their retirement accounts, streamlined where appropriate, and created a strategy that aligned with their future goals rather than their past employment history.
Because their existing life insurance was tied to employment, we recommended term life policies that would protect them regardless of where military orders or career changes might take them. We also addressed an often overlooked gap by recommending an estate plan. Even for a couple that includes a future attorney, it had not yet been prioritized, which is more common than most people realize. Soon, they have the legal structure in place to protect each other and their future.
Navigating Uncertainty With Confidence
As they chose to remain hands on with their investments, my role became both strategist and guide. Together, we have navigated not just the technical aspects of their plan, but also the emotional weight of uncertainty. During the most recent government shutdown, they faced the dual stress of potential income disruption and an impending PCS. Having a plan in place did not eliminate the uncertainty, but it gave them something far more powerful. It gave them control, clarity, and the confidence to make decisions without panic.
Using Money as a Tool for Freedom
Today, Tonks and Remus are not just managing their finances. They are using them as a tool to build the life they want. They travel intentionally. They make decisions with purpose. They understand how each choice connects to their future. And perhaps most importantly, they no longer feel like they are guessing.
Their story is not about having it all figured out from the beginning. It is about what becomes possible when you have a plan that evolves with you, especially in a life that is anything but predictable.
