As a financial planner dedicated to empowering women, especially those navigating significant life transitions, I recognize the profound impact that sudden financial changes can have on one’s life. Sudden money, whether expected or not, can bring about not only financial transformation but also emotional and psychological shifts that require expert guidance.

Inspired by Susan Bradley

My journey into understanding the complexities of sudden money began with Susan Bradley’s groundbreaking book, Sudden Money: Managing a Financial Windfall. Bradley’s insights into the psychological and practical aspects of sudden wealth are enlightening. The book details how these windfalls can significantly alter the trajectory of one’s financial and personal life.

Bradley lists eight key events that can lead to sudden money:

  1. Winning the lottery
  2. Taking a lump sum retirement payout
  3. Insurance settlements
  4. Divorce settlements
  5. Intergenerational inheritance
  6. Spousal inheritance
  7. Becoming an overnight sensation in entertainment or athletics
  8. Stock options

Each of these events brings its own set of challenges and opportunities, and Bradley’s compassionate approach helps readers navigate these complex waters.

Continuous Learning for Better Client Support

Inspired by Susan Bradley and her work, I pursued the Women in Transition micro-credential through the Financial Transitionist Institute. This specialized training equipped me with the tools to better support women facing these sudden money events. Encouraged by the impact of this training, I have also begun the Certified Financial Transitionist (CeFT®) program to further refine my skills and understanding.
